What inspired me?
A piece of Azurite.
While browsing one of my local stores for ammonites, a small piece of Azurite caught my eye. Streaks, spots and veins of colour contrasted with broken, crusty surfaces. Intricate combinations of vibrant blue
and green offset turquoise and flecks of yellow.
The painting is inspired by the colours and textures of the stone, not an attempt to recreate it faithfully.
Although I initially had a single piece in mind, the composition soon demanded a second panel. As I was having such fun painting the first, I was very happy to follow my intuition.
Some people have commented that they feel the piece should be portrait format. That is certainly possible, though in that case the piece becomes less abstract and more of a seascape. It comes down
to personal preference.
