The Pattern Collection
Abstract acrylics inspired by pattern in nature.
Artist Statement (Pattern)
Pattern in nature delights and intrigues me. Less so the regular repetition of a motif; more the organic arrangement of colours and shapes. Patterns that perhaps aren't immediately apparent, but nevertheless demonstrate adherence to a particular repetition and structure.
I’m open to the unexpected: colour combinations I'd never have imagined; interlocking shapes; seams of sparkle cutting through a plain surface; complex surfaces built from multiple layers.
These pieces begin with research, an investigation of the subject’s appearance, structure and character. Cropping and enlarging removes the unnecessary; the object is lost and the drama of pattern or formation revealed. Assessment leads to adjustment - emphasis of shape or texture; simplification; focus on a particular aspect.
Construction is usually a flat plane; sometimes a regular shape, sometimes organic. I revel in the feel of acrylic as paint is dabbed, spread, spattered or spritzed. Gels and pastes are manipulated or extruded, scored or pierced.
This collection is rooted in the forces that have shaped nature through millennia, dictating appearance, structure, and growth. Yet from that comes something entirely new; contemporary work that leads the viewer to discover what might otherwise remain unseen.
